Diploma in Aviation


Waikato Aviation offers the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 6), in either Flight Instruction or Airline Preparation. Graduates will receive the skills, knowledge, and licences to operate as commercial pilots under New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority, as well as gaining an NZQA-approved aviation qualification.

This is a full-time, two-year programme, providing theory and practical flight training for students to complete the following:

· Private Pilot Licence

· Commercial Pilot Licence

· Multi Engine Instrument Rating

· Air Transport Pilot Licence theory exams in Human Factors and Meteorology

· NZQA-approved diploma qualification

Because it is an NZQA-approved programme, student loan funding is available for eligible students.

In Year 2 student choose between two strands:

Flight Instructor Strand


 

Graduates of the Flight Instructor Strand will gain a Category C Flight Instructor rating on top of qualifying as a Commercial Pilot.  This enables them to share their passion for, and skills and knowledge pf flying with the next generation of pilots, instructing in both the ground theory and the practical aspects the Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence.

 

This part of the programme includes:

  • An Instructional Techniques Course
  • A flight instructor ground course
  • The flight training syllabus for a Category C Flight Instructor Rating, including 25 hours dual flight instruction and spin recovery flight training

Becoming a flight instructor is a great way to build knowledge and improve your flying skills. It is also a fantastic way to gain valuable flying hours after you have completed your diploma.

Airline Prep Strand


 

Graduates of the Airline Preparation Strand Diploma will complete all Airline Transport Pilot Licence theory exams and complete a Multi-Crew Cooperation course on top of qualifying as a commercial pilot. This strand is ideal for students wishing to pursue a career as an Airline Pilot, preparing them to operate safely and effectively in a multi-crew operating environment.

 

This course includes the following Airline Transport Pilot Licence theory exams:

  • Basic Gas Turbine
  • ATPL Flight Planning
  • ATPL Law
  • ATPL Instruments and Navigation Aids
  • ATPL Systems and Performance
  • ATPL Navigation

plus a month-long Multi-Crew Cooperation Course.

This course covers both the theory and practical skills required to operate safely and effectively within a multi-crew airline operating environment.

 

Entry Requirements


 

To be eligible for enrolment into the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 6) with Waikato Aviation, you need to meet the following entry requirements:

· Be at least 18 years old

· Be a New Zealand citizen or have permanent New Zealand residency

    (we cannot take international students at this time)

· Have obtained a minimum of NCEA Level 2, with at least 14 credits in                     English Mathematics, Sciences, and a fourth supporting subject

· Meet the CAA aviation English language proficiency standard

· Meet the CAA fit and proper person criteria

· Have or be able to obtain a CAA NZ Class 1 Medical Certificate

· A copy of your birth certificate or a current passport

· An NZQA Record of Achievement showing NCEA Level 2 achievement

· An ADAPT pre-screening report

· An NZTA Demerit Points and Suspension History report

· A Ministry of Justice Criminal Conviction History report

· Current CAA NZ Class 1 Medical Certificate

If you are not a New Zealand citizen, you need to provide evidence of permanent residency.

If English is not your first language, you need to provide evidence of your English proficiency.

We accept applications at any time, but have two intakes per year in February and July. Interviews are usually about four months earlier. The interview includes:

· A face-to-face interview

· Written assessments in Mathematics and English

· A flight simulator exercise
